Years ago, I thought it was difficult to name a cat. “She’d live with that name forever! It needs to be perfect!” I thought. Keep in mind that this was a cat. A cat.
We’re now trying to name a second child – another girl – and finding it significantly more difficult than the cat (who would have thought). Not to mention that I wasted what could have been a great person name on my pet. Part of the problem is we picked out the best name for Peanut – or what we think is the best name. It seems difficult to match. I’ve had a boy name picked out for years, but in this case, it doesn’t help me. Particularly because the name I loved – Miles – isn’t one of those androgynous ones that can go for either sex.
People give me suggestions (including the owner of our local children’s store). And although they’re well meaning, often beautiful, nothing fits.
I’ve also asked Peanut for help, which, as you can imagine, generally works out well. Her last list included Tobi (the name of a toddler friend), Katy (the name of an adult friend), and Hodi (?). (Co-incidentally, Hodi is also the name of a small plastic parrot she owns. Its best friends are “Tutu”, a pegasus, and “Kircy”, a rabbit.)
Got anything for us? Throw it out there. In the meantime, I’ll be working on my list.
She has to live with this name forever, after all.

I obsessed with the name Kinsey! My husband is adamantly against it (He is Japanese/Canadian and thinks it’s too “all-American” – I couldn’t disagree more). Good thing we keep having boys! Good-luck!!
I do love your cat’s name and also think that there are a lot of beautiful names in your family..(like Gi Gi’s name). I’m sure that you guys will come up with something lovely. xx
Naming our girls was one of the hardest things ever. We’re both picking and my husband was beyond difficult. He decided he was especially found of three syllable names that could be broken down into two syllable nicknames ending in “ie.” WTF?! lol
We ended up with Samantha (Sammie) and Elyssa (Ellie). I happen to love them both and think they fit my girls perfectly.
Good luck!
Really very difficult. Why not name her Sarah? I think that is a pretty name. It definitely is going to take some time to decide.
Well, perhaps you could change Miles to a feminine name like Miley. My current personal fav. Is Gianna which would sound pretty when paired with Peanut’s name as
They are sisters and you will be saying their names together often.
Let’s see- I like Miley too kinda like miles, my runner up for rio was summer I also love the name Bristol
I named my eldest daughter Claire, because it was a beautiful & dignified name both my husband and I loved AND it could *not* be shortened into a silly nickname. Another criteria was the name had to be not so weird the kid would get picked on in kindergarten.
Remember to pick a name that hollers well. You’ll be calling out that name for the next 18 years or so.
I love Alice, Syliva, Emmeline and Christabel – all suffragettes.
lol! I keep on thinking about the shortening aspect, as well. I don’t want any name that can be shortened into something ridiculous…I’m always thinking about it!
I actually really like Bristol – never thought of that one!
Gianna is really pretty!
Sarah’s my name so I don’t think we’ll be going that route…definitely agree with you on the time thing, though.
Those names are super cute! I think there’s something so difficult about naming a second child of the same sex…at least for us! Wish us luck
Thanks
I actually really, really like this suggestion – need to add it to my list. Getting my husband on board with any of my suggestions has been one of the more difficult aspects!
As a former history/social studies teacher, I LOVE the historical aspect here
I can’t believe I missed the big news! CONGRATS MOMMY!!! 2 girls should be a never-dull-moment kind of house. Names are so important and can kind of roll out the carpet for a person I believe in resume/classic names. Maybe you might have to see her to find the right fit but whatever you choose will be perfect!
Not sure if I’ll decide to have another baby but if I ever did I’d want another girl. Here are some lovely names I don’t know if I’ll ever get to use on a human baby (there are always the furry ones to consider)… Whitney, Nora, Annette (Annie for short), Laurel, Lorraine and Fiona. Good luck and good health!
Haven’t stopped by in ages – hooray you are expecting! I actually came on here today to see if you might be
You know, it being around that common time for #2
Naming is HARD, especially for a second I found!! I have all my favourite names to Soleil, but then I found at the last minute #2 named herself. I was convinced I was having a boy (both times were a surprise) and I had his name picked out for years. Then days before our second arrived her name wouldn’t get out of my mind! It wasn’t even originally at the top of my list – but she so suits it. Are you going to share the name after you picked it? Soleil goes by her middle name on my blog, but my second doesn’t. Makes no sense.
