I still haven’t gotten over the fact that baby shoes can cost upwards of $50.00. I mean, that’s how much I spend on my shoes. Or less. Really, it shouldn’t be a shock. Add the word “baby” to basically any product and it’s free reign to charge X (ridiculous dollar amount) for whatever. Because when people are insanely happy, or insanely tired, or tethered to a screaming toddler they will pay X (ridiculous dollar amount) for whatever.
That being said, small people seem to grow out of shoes in ten minutes. We had a whole load of shoes that fit Peanut perfectly before the move. Actually, most of them were too big. Mid-July arrived, and away the shoes went. Into a box. When I unpacked them last week I was semi-horrified to find that very few were still suitable (this was after several minutes of attempting to shove a miniature converse on her foot). I thought I was all prepped for fall, and everything. Not so.
Now, Peanut does have wide feet. Wide. Every time we go to try on shoes the sales person makes sure to tell me, “whoah! She has really wide feet”. So I’m not really sure if the feet have gotten longer or wider. But that’s neither here nor there. Never underestimate the growth potential of a toddler, I guess.
Anyways. Yesterday morning Peanut found a pair of Sketchers with sparkly rhinestones on the toe. She brought them over, and (with her standard grunt) asked for me to put them on. I knew they were too small. “Peanut, these are too little for you,” I told her. I took the shoes and put them back in the closet. I went to the bathroom to get something, but could hear Peanut sobbing from her bedroom. When I went through to see what was wrong, I caught her holding one shoe in each hand. Tears rolling. Complete devastation.
As a parent, you pick your battles. So I shoved those shoes on with every might of my being. Her little foot pudged out from around the corners.
She smiled, gently touching the rhinestones.
Don’t get between a girl and her shoes.

I don’t blame her. There is nothing like a rhinestone shoe
I’m with Peanut. Even if my ankle fat is hanging out the sides, I want my rhinestone shoes. I dare you to try and pry them off of me.
Such a diva in the making I love it. I can relate pregnancy resulted in bigger feet but there are a few shoes that I love too much to part with so I shove my foot in with all my might &deal with the pain. For a great pair of shoes it’s worth it!
Aww, poor sweetie! Thank God she has a mom like you who understands the love affair between girls and their shoes!
yeah i spent $56 on C first pair, which he wore for about 2 months. His current pair of sandels cost $11 at payless and have been with us since June. Im sticking to one pair at a time for the little guy, but i guess with girls its different.
Uh oh…did you tell her you’ll go out and buy her new sparkly shoes??
Oh definitely a fashionista in the making there! Just wait (if it has not happened already) until she tells you exactly what she is and is not going to wear each day. I no longer dare buy clothes for my daughter unless she is right there with me as if she decides she does not like something, she cannot be persuaded otherwise. Right now she refuses to wear anything but dresses.
Lovely post. As for shoes, my daughter like me also has very wide feet so we have to buy the right shoes for her always, but I go to the Outlet Mall Stride Rite store and there you pay half price for last year’s version of the relevant seasonal shoes which is a whole lot better than $50+ for this year’s version.
I just went through this with my 5.5 yo last week! She found a pair of old sandals in her little brother’s closet that she used to ADORE. She ran into my room with her toes hanging off the edges screaming, “they still fit!!!” It took me twenty minutes to convince her they did. not. fit. BUT, her little brother now has a new pair of sandals.
I love your blog! I’ll be back!
My child loves sparkly shoes, too. Except that my child is a boy, and you know what? They don’t make sparkly shoes for boys. So we shop at KMart, buy $10 shoes ($15, if I’m feeling flush that week) and then go to Michaels to get us some bling.
I love her fascination, love and dedication to a pair of shoes that look good.
I guess they’re never too young to learn that in order for our feet to look good we have to make some sacrifices, ha!
xo
Nola is the same way! She LOVES shoes. She adores shoe shopping almost as much as I did in my pre-baby days. Now I pretty much save the money for Nola cause this kid has expensive taste.
Awwww. My daughter’s fascinated with shoes right now too…last night she even wanted to wear them to bed!
awwwww………..she’s just being a girl……..i would squeeze into too small shoes if they were sparkly sketchers
awwwww………..she’s just being a girl……..i would squeeze into too small shoes if they were sparkly sketchers. My daughter has a way better shoe collection than me.
Oh, this is a dangerous precedent!
