Around two months ago a friend asked me if I wanted to start running together. She was hoping to train for a marathon – in January. I was looking to really get back into shape and needed a partner to motivate me. Our first run was 8 weeks ago; 4 miles . It was tough. The next week, we pushed ourselves a little bit harder. We’ve been gradually increasing our mileage every Friday. This morning we ran 12 miles. It’s something I didn’t believe was possible; I never thought I’d be back at this level of fitness after having Cleo. But hard work and a Bob purchased for $100 off my neighborhood listserv can do wonders. It’s possible.
When I started running it was about trying to be fit. But really, it’s so much more. It’s a mental break; an opportunity to test my limits – and beyond. It’s the chance to connect with a friend and also disconnect; to quiet the demands of family and work and everything. I feel good.
I’m running to show my girls I’m strong and healthy – and that’s beautiful.
Where am I going with this? Not entirely sure. I’d love to do a half marathon at some point; timing’s the question, of course.
For now I’m enjoying the fact that I’m able, and accomplishing.
